5 Things You Didn't Know About Crown Princess Máxima
1. She was proposed to in a very romantic way
Crown Prince Willem-Alexander proposed to her on 19. January 2001, after a lovely afternoon where he had taught Máxima to iceskate on a frozen pond behind the palace Huis ten bosch . He enticed her to a place on the ice where he had hidden red roses and champagne. Willem-Alexander had practiced the proposal several times to make sure it would be perfect. He then proposed to her in English to make sure she would understand him. She did and eventually replied with a "yes".
2. Her family was banned from attending her wedding
Her father is a former Argentinian politician who was accused of playing a role in the "Dirty War" where an estimated 10,000-30,000 people disappeared. However he claimed he didn't know about the people disappearing. The Dutch parliament gave Willem-Alexander the permission to marry Ms Máxima Zorreguita on the grounds that she herself had done nothing wrong however her father was banned from attending the wedding.
3. Nelson Mandela attended her wedding
Her wedding was attended by over 1,700 people. Among them were Nelson Mandela, Queen Margrethe of Denmark, Prince Charles and many more.
4. Her Daughters Are All Named After Dutch Queens
Maxima has three daughters with Prince Willem-Alexander:
HRH Princess Catharina-Amalia Beatrix Carmen Victoria - Beatrix after her grandmother the reigning Queen Beatrix
HRH Princess Alexia Juliana Marcela Laurentien - Juliana after her great-grandmother Queen Juliana
HRH Princess Ariane Wilhelmina Máxima Inés - Wilhelmina after her great-great-grandmother Queen Wilhelmina
5. She Owns a summerhouse in Mosambique
Since 2007 Máxima and Willem-Alexander have visited their summerhouse in Machangulo Mosambique every year together with their three princesses.
